The Silent Threat of EMF

It’s no secret that manmade devices and their electromagnetic radiation are not aligned with our natural biology. Electromagnetic radiation (EMF) is substantially more prevalent today than just ten or fifteen years ago, and what makes it so much more harmful is the close proximity that we live with it. All the devices that surround us today are exceptionally close to us, including laptops, cellphones, tablets and more. Unless you’re in the twenty percent of people who are electro hypersensitive, you probably won’t feel the direct biological impacts of EMF until they amount to long term chronic diseases. Since we can’t exactly ditch our devices and trash our tablets, we can remindful with how and when we use them, and set limits to protect our health.

So, what’s the deal with EMF? Our devices, from our smart phones, laptops, and tablets emit a radio frequency signal which allows one device to communicate with another device. This radio frequency signal disrupts our cells when they interact with our bodies. Our devices are omnidirectional, meaning they transmit in every direction, including through the body, causing the interference with cells and functions of our bodies. Our beloved and heavily used smart phones have been proven to penetrate the head while we hold them to talk by up to one inch, while simultaneously heating up our cells on average by two degrees. Multiple well-founded studies also show how carrying the same smart phone in your pocket affects the male and female reproductive organs adversely.

Naturally, this interference also negatively affects our reproductive health. In fact, after just a few hours of a laptop being in a man’s lap, twenty five percent of sperm becomes immobile according to scientific evidence. Scientist and researcher Cindy Sage conducted studies on the biological effects from electromagnetic field exposure which demonstrated how a low energy signal from a laptop resting on your lap increases a pregnant woman’s risk of miscarriage by two to three times. Another large population study revealed the impact of EMF radiation on the womb. Roughly two percent of the women participating in the study developed tumors that became cancerous. EMF impacts and mutates the cells, so that even young girls using tablets and devices are likely to experience long term effects on their DNA. What we don’t yet know is what the impact of those damaged cells will be in the future since our exposure to EMF has only spiked in the last decade and a half. Scientists fear future generations will experience unavoidable health implications. A simple way to reduce the amount of exposure we receive is to place the laptop on a desk and make it a rule to never keep it on your lap. Moving the laptop away from the body by at least one foot, reduces the danger by eighty percent. Be warned, pillows do nothing to shield you from the harmful emissions so propping your laptop on a pillow won’t change a thing. What shields you is actually the distance and having it at least a foot away from your body. Monitor kid’s use of tablets, especially in bed or on the couch as they are often resting on their bodies. Try propping them up on a table or desk rather than holding the devices in their hands.

What’s frightening is that less than ten years ago we didn’t see all these devices being a fundamental part of children’s classroom learning experiences. Now each student is equipped with a smart phone, uses a computer all day, and often also has a tablet on them for hours at a time every day of the week. We’re also seeing a steep rise in learning and developmental problems including autism, and scientists are startling to draw links between the two. Only time will tell if this new model of classroom and a rise in child behavioral and developmental problems can be attributed to the emissions surrounding them. It’s important to note that one device in a room won’t hurt you much, but imagine over fifty various devices in one room packed full of kids. All of the kids have computers, all of the kids have mobile phones and the energy level is high for eight hours per day. Another contained environment filled with strong EMF signals is on an airplane. Now that most modern jet aircraft are equipped with WIFI, you’re seeing even higher levels of radiation moving in all directions including through the human body.

Chances are you’re one of the millions that agree that wireless headphones are the best invention of recent times. You probably love rocking your wireless headphones out and about. They’re super convenient right? Well, bad news for Air Pods, Pixel Buds, Raycons and any other wireless iteration of sound gear- they are seriously bad for your health. When you have an energy level of a Bluetooth, it’s ten times less energy than a WIFI, but when you have it in your ear, it’s hitting the body’s cells all the time. In summary, it’s dangerous. It’s a lot better to use a conventional wired headset because, you guessed it, the energy levels are less. Best case for health is taking your phone calls on speakerphone or listening to tunes via a speaker so the distance is limiting the effects of the energy to the cells of the body. Also keeping your phone on flight mode throughout the night if you can’t switch it off due to an early alarm is another important factor in lowering your exposure.

So, what about radiation cases and other shielding devices? Do they mitigate the energy that affects our cells? When faced with a myriad of products on the marketplace making such claims, make sure you go for brands that have an independent study. These shielding devices and covers take the omnidirectional signal radiating from your device, and stop it from touching your body. Legitimate products do in fact stop the EMF radiation from penetrating inwards towards your body where they cause damage, and direct the flow towards communication towers, routers and other devices where they are better suited to go.

Since we can’t very well avoid EMF radiation completely, it’s really important to manage our exposure and be mindful of the harmful effects on our health. Setting boundaries, monitoring our screen time and habits are super potent ways to protect our cells from DNA damage. EMF devices aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, and with the constant evolution of new technologies, the modern human and their lifespan may look markedly different from that of our predecessors as recently as the generation before us.
